1. Why did you choose to work at Cañada College? I’ve spent my entire professional career working in the public and non-profit sector.
While finishing my BA at San Francisco State and after graduating, I worked for the
City of San Mateo for a number of years. I then moved on to work for a private non-profit
organization in San Francisco but I missed working in the public sector. When a great
job at Cañada presented itself, I went for it! I had never worked in higher education
before and have learned so much from all of my amazing colleagues. I love that Cañada
is a small community college and the faculty, staff, and administrators are all focused
on the common goal of doing everything they can do to help our students succeed.
2. Describe Cañada College in three words. BEST COLLEGE (in the) DISTRICT.
3. What makes you laugh the most? Well, I laugh at myself all the time! Other than that – children (look up any of the
“Hey Jimmy Kimmel I told my kids I ate all of their Halloween candy” or “Hey Jimmy
Kimmel I gave my kid a terrible Christmas present” videos), my cat who thinks he is
a dog, my fiancé and my friends.
4. What would you sing at Karaoke night? Any song by Miranda Lambert.
5. What is your favorite spot on our campus? I must admit, I’ve got a pretty nice view from my office.
Misha Kealoha Chosen as Keynote Speaker for Leadership Summit - October 2017
This October, Student Life and Leadership Manager Michiko “Misha” Kealoha, was chosen
to be the keynote speaker for Orange Coast College’s Annual Leadership Summit. With
an opening address on Critical Hope Pedagogy and resilience, Misha facilitated a day
long training on self-awareness, community building, and positive change for 120 of
Orange Coast College’s student leaders and staff.

1. Why did you choose to work at Cañada College? Natural selection! I’m a Cañada alum and I was working at the Bookstore the summer
after I graduated in 2011. My Mom was a student here and a member of TRIO. Romeo Garcia,
the TRIO Director at the time, was looking for someone to work part-time to replace
the Office Assistant and my mother suggested me. I had an interview and I’ve been
here ever since. It’s quite interesting to experience Cañada as both a student and
a staff member. As a student, I felt so supported. As a worker, I have even more appreciation for
that support because I know about the love, care, and dedication that goes into the
support available at Cañada.
2. Describe Cañada College in three words. Destination. Determination. Deliberation. For my Harry Potter fans.
3. If your best friend was sitting here, what would he/she say is the best part about
being your friend? She would say my loyalty. No matter how life may get in the way of spending time together,
we always pick up where we left off.
4. What would you sing at Karaoke night? Formation by the one and only, Queen Beyoncé.
5. What is your favorite spot on our campus? The windows facing the campus in the Learning Center. I love the view of the hills
as well as our beautiful campus.
Classified Win at 4CS Classified Leadership institute - June 2017
Cañada College Classified did a great job of representing their classified pride and dedication at the Classified Leadership institute in June 2017 at the Granlibakken Hotel and Resort in Lake Tahoe. Maggie Baez, Maria Huning, and Maggie Lozano presented “Lighthouse in the Fog” which was a best practices and policies presentation for Classified Senates in the State of California. It highlighted the amazing work of the Cañada Classified Senate and members at the local and state level. Both Maggie Baez and Maggie Lozano won the prestigious 4CS scholarship to attend the event. In addition, at the awards ceremony Maria Huning was able to accept the 4CS 2nd Place award for Classified Senate Website Design. It was a winning event all around for Cañada College and the Classified Senate!
Olive Hill Press 5/26/17 Cañada College Spotlight: Adolfo Leiva | Director of Spark Point
1. Why did you choose to work at Cañada College? I came to work at Cañada College when I was presented with an opportunity that very
few of us ever experience. I was hired to design, build and open a brand new program
and one that I was very passionate about. Knowing that SparkPoint could make a difference
in students’ and their families’ lives by providing them with skills and resources
to weather financial challenges is critical for students working towards realizing
their academic and professional goals.
2. What do you think is the biggest challenge to student success? In one word, Life. A student can have a goal in mind, create an SEP, start of the
semester strong and have a plan for educational success. However, along the way, life
events may occur that lead them to have to change their plan or at least the timeline
of their plan. Hunger, housing, transportation, childcare, the need for greater income,
added family responsibilities and other factors may negatively impact student success.
These challenges often have financial implications so I see SparkPoint as a student’s
opportunity to create a financial plan so they can be better prepared to manage these
unexpected events and stay on track as much as possible.
3. What has been your favorite moment working with SparkPoint? There are two dates that I’d say are my favorite moments. The first was the day I
attended my first SparkPoint Coordinating Meeting. When I was introduced to the team,
I was so touched by the (unexpected) applause that I was given. To immediately feel
welcome before I’d even introduced myself to the college community was quite a moving.
The second would have to be, February 5, 2015, the day of the SparkPoint Grand Opening!
There was a live band, plenty of food, balloons everywhere an incredible feeling of
celebration in the air.
4. Where is your favorite place to eat in Redwood City? About a week after I arrived at Cañada College, Candace, Melissa, Trish and Lizette
invited me to lunch at “Little Madfish”, a Japanese restaurant located at Sequoia
Station. I will never forget that day because I was unfamiliar with the area and had
never heard of this restaurant so I thought my new colleagues called themselves the
“Little Madfish” group. I wasn’t till I got there that I realized that we actually
going to, “Little Madfish!” Ever since then, when someone asks for suggestions on
where to go eat in Redwood City, Little Madfish is always my first suggestion.
5. What is one advice you would give to students? First, join SparkPoint! We all benefit from learning how to manage our money better.
Then, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek out resources. There are so many programs
on campus that are all designed to assist you to succeed along with countless staff
and faculty who work are committed to your success. Along the way, get involved! Join
a campus club or activity that may interest you where you can explore a curiosity
or passion. Next, whether your goal is to develop your skills, earn a certificate,
or transfer, when you leave Cañada College, be proud of your accomplishments and don’t
forget to give back to the community. Finally, enjoy your time at Cañada College.
