Foster & Kinship Care Education Program
A Cañada College & San Mateo County Resource Family Approval Collaboration
The mission of the Foster and Kinship Care Education Program “is to provide quality education and support opportunities to caregivers of children and youth in out-of-home care so that these providers may meet the educational, emotional, behavioral and developmental needs of children and youth in the foster care system.”
Target Populations:
- Resource (formally ‘Foster’) Parents
- Relative caregivers
- Current and former foster youth
FKCE was established in 1984 as a result of the Senate Bill 2003- the Foster Children and Parent Training Act. The Community College Chancellor’s Office was designated the agency to administer the program and to provide funding to Community Colleges for the provision of training and education to potential and existing foster parents. Cañada College’s Education and Human Development Department works closely with San Mateo County Human Services Agency to provide free orientations, classes and workshops for the Pre-Approval and Post-Approval trainings for the Resource Families.
